Emergency Roof Repair: What to Know

No one wants to come face to face with an emergency roof repair. Even something as small as a leak can quickly become serious if given the right (or wrong) situation. When an emergency situation occurs, it is important to act fast. Here are some steps you can take before a bad situation gets worse!

What is considered an Emergency Roof Repair?

Roofing emergencies are caused by many different things. Storms and weather damages are huge culprits, but an emergency roof repair can also arise out of simply neglect or wear and tear.

During stronger storms, wind and rain, as well as lightning can cause extreme damage, not to mention debris, and hail. After a storm, it is not uncommon to notice damage in the form of craters, broken shingles, or even missing parts of your roof.

Any damages that may lead to leaks, major water damage, or pest infestation constitute a roofing emergency and is very time-sensitive.

What to do when a Roofing Emergency Occurs?

When a roofing emergency occurs, you should be acting as fast as possible to reduce the amount of damage caused. Here are some of the main things you should be doing right away.

  1. The most important thing to consider is your safety, so ensure it is safe to go outside before heading out. Do not risk checking on your home, before the storm has completely passed.
  2. Analyze your home and check for damages. Take a walk around the entirety of your property, first checking for the obvious damages, leaks, and missing shingles. Make sure to document all of the damages you see, the best way to do this is by taking pictures. This will allow you to justify all of the damages that have occurred and will be useful if you file an insurance claim. Take as close-up on shots as possible without putting yourself in danger.
  3. Make sure your home is not compromised. If the danger of further damage is eminently present, you should be working to close off open areas, using tarps over damaged spots, as temporary protection.
  4. Call a roofer. Call your local roofing company and ask for professional help, they will be able to diagnose your problem and fix your roof. DO NOT go onto the roof yourself after a storm as this is much more dangerous than it would be normally.
